Somatic Voice Workshop #2: Powerful Vocal Techniques for Mind-Body Connection

 —  —

The Move Room, 164 Ottawa St. N, Hamilton, ON

We are not necessarily taught how to speak or sing powerfully. In fact, we often do many things to suppress our vocal power and the inherent pleasure it can bring. The voice and how we use it can connect us with some of the most vulnerable aspects of self-expression, identity and with each other. This workshop is all about 'vocal empowerment’; uncovering the physiological, technical, emotional, spiritual and intersectional aspects of our vocal identity, in order to reach a fuller expression. Gain comprehensive experience of the body, sound production and practical techniques to help you best utilize your voice as an instrument of both physical and emotional power.

This workshop will run over two sessions, July 28 and August 25. You can attend one or both!

Our August 25 session will focus on:

  • Resonators! We will talk about where sound happens in the body and the different registers of our voice. We will even learn how to have smoother transitions between those tricky high or in between pitches.
  • We will get more into the anatomic and emotional specifics of tongue and jaw tension and why these are the two big sound inhibitors.
  • Shapes and muscles used to produce consonants and vowels, and how we can apply this understanding to optimize the sounds we wish to make.

What to expect: Expect to be making noise! We will learn about healthy ways to make the spectrum of quiet to loud sounds and laugh about how fun it is to yell and be silly. There will be an opening and closing (check-in and check-out). Please come in comfortable clothing you can move well in and bring a water bottle, pen and notebook.
